From Summit to Sea - An Epic Adventure

A breathtaking, adrenaline-filled MTB adventure from the heights of Costa Rica to the crystalline waters of the Caribbean coast.

The adventure literally starts above the clouds that commonly float over the valley of Cartago. We drive up the hill and mount the bikes near the crater of the Irazú Volcano.

At 3,400 meters (11,200 ft) the air is not only quite thin, but the chilled winds and dispersed showers may cool you to the bone. That said keep in mind gear for wind, rain and cold weather on this first day.

There is an elevation loss of approximately 2,600 meters (7,800 ft) in a total route distance of close to 50 km (30 miles), quite a beautiful downhill it is, overseeing the valley where the town of Turrialba is located, as well as the Caribbean coast on the distance, this is one of the most scenic rides in the country.

From the top of the Irazú Volcano, we head Southeast to the base of the crater of the Turrialba Volcano and then south through farmlands towards the town of Turrialba. There are several technical downhill’s on this route, breaks, suspension and gears MUST be in optimal condition.

Note that part of the route for this stretch is used for the renowned Ruta de los Conquistadores, La Ruta as it’s commonly known. It was Stage III of this year’s edition of La Ruta.

Eduardo Baldioceda, one of Costa Rica’s best adventure guides and part of Team Redbull’s adventure racing team for Costa Rica will lead the adventure. Eduardo’s adventure racing team has won the Costa Rican championship in many occasions and has raced in the Desafío de los Volcanes in Patagonia and the AR World Championship in Brazil. He will be assisted by “Sidar”, an experienced mountain biker. Sidar participates in the “Copa Endurance”, one of the country’s most prestigious and demanding series.
